Welding is the one trade where the clothing is the PPE

In most trades workwear is about durability and looking professional, with the protective items bolted on separately. Welding is different. The garment itself is doing protective work: resisting ignition, limiting flame spread, and shedding the spatter and hot particles that a normal polycotton overall would happily melt into your skin. That changes how you buy it, and it means "a tough boiler suit" is not the same thing as welding clothing.

Ordinary polyester is the wrong material

Standard polycotton work clothing can melt and stick when hot spatter lands on it. Flame-resistant fabrics are engineered not to do that, which is the entire reason they exist.

Coverage matters as much as fabric

Welding garments are cut to close gaps. High collars, covered fastenings, no upward-facing pockets that catch a hot bead, and sleeves that meet gauntlets properly.

Process changes the requirement

Light TIG work and heavy MIG or MMA overhead work do not put the same demand on clothing. The standard recognises this with two classes.

FR welding jackets

The core garment for hot work. Look for certification to EN ISO 11611, with the class matched to your process rather than assumed.

FR trousers

Often forgotten, because people focus on the top half. Falling spatter lands on thighs, laps and boot tops.

FR coveralls

Single-garment coverage with no gap at the waist. Popular for site welding and confined work where a jacket rides up.

Leather aprons and sleeves

Worn over FR clothing for heavy work, positional welding and grinding. They take the abuse so the garment underneath lasts.

Welding gauntlets

Longer than standard gloves to cover the wrist and forearm gap. Different processes want different dexterity, so it is worth trying more than one. See glove ratings explained.

Safety footwear

Boots for hot work want quick-release fastening and a tongue that keeps spatter out. See safety boots.

FR base layers

What is worn underneath matters. A synthetic base layer under an FR jacket undoes some of the protection you paid for.

EN ISO 11611, in plain English

EN ISO 11611 is the European standard for protective clothing used in welding and allied processes. It is the number to look for on the label of a welding garment, and it is separate from EN ISO 11612, which covers clothing protecting against heat and flame more generally. Some garments carry both.

Class 1

Intended for less hazardous welding techniques and situations, producing less spatter and radiant heat. Typically the lighter end of the work.

Class 2

Intended for more hazardous techniques and situations, with more spatter and higher radiant heat. Typically heavier processes and positional work.

Which class you need depends on your process, position, environment and your own risk assessment. We will not guess it for you. Tell us what your assessment specifies, or what you weld and how, and we will match products to it. Buying FR clothing without wasting money

Flame-resistant garments cost more than standard workwear, so the mistakes cost more too. Three that come up constantly.

Kitting the whole firm in FR

The welders need it. The office, the estimator, the driver and often the fitters do not. Buy FR for the people doing hot work and normal branded kit for everyone else. It is cheaper and the team actually wears it.

Ignoring what goes underneath

An FR jacket over a polyester hoodie is a compromised system. If you are specifying FR outerwear, specify what goes under it too.

Washing it like normal workwear

FR properties can be affected by how garments are laundered and by what gets used on them. Follow the garment's own care label rather than the shop's usual routine. Our care guide covers general workwear washing.

Branding welding and fabrication kit

Fabrication is a business where the customer often visits the shop, and where site work puts your name in front of main contractors. Branded kit does real work here. It just needs doing correctly on protective garments.

Decoration on FR garments needs care

Adding a logo to a certified garment is not the same as adding one to a polo. Placement, thread and method all matter, and the wrong choice can affect the garment's performance. We will advise on what is appropriate for the specific garment rather than applying a default.

Common questions

Do I need Class 1 or Class 2 welding clothing?

That depends on your processes, working position and environment, and it should come from your own risk assessment rather than from us. Class 2 is intended for more hazardous techniques and situations with more spatter and radiant heat. Tell us what your assessment specifies and we will supply to it.

Is EN ISO 11611 the same as EN ISO 11612?

No. EN ISO 11611 is specific to welding and allied processes. EN ISO 11612 covers protective clothing against heat and flame more broadly. Some garments are certified to both, which is useful if your team does hot work beyond welding. Our guide to EN standards on workwear labels explains how to read them.

Can I order for a one-man mobile welding business?

Yes. There is no minimum order, so a sole trader gets the same branding and the same pricing structure as a fabrication shop with thirty staff.

Can you brand flame-resistant garments?

Yes, but it has to be done appropriately for the garment. Placement and method matter on certified clothing, so we will advise per garment rather than applying our standard approach automatically.

What about the rest of the shop?

Most fabrication firms order FR for the welders and standard branded workwear for everyone else. We handle both on one order, and keep your logo setup on file so a new starter's polo matches the rest.
