How Hi-Vis Workwear Actually Works

Hi-vis does two different jobs with two different materials: one for daylight, one for headlights. Knowing which is which explains why a jacket can look bright and still be failing at night.

A hi-vis garment is really two safety products stitched together. The bright fabric is doing one job, in daylight and dusk. The silvery-grey bands are doing a completely different job, at night, when a vehicle's headlights hit them. They work by different physics, they wear out in different ways, and a garment can be fine on one count and failed on the other. Understanding the split is what lets you judge whether a garment is still worth wearing, and helps you set a sensible replacement point. Whether hi-vis is required for a given task, and to what class, is a decision for your own risk assessment, not something a garment's label decides for you.

Part one: fluorescent fabric, for daylight

The bright yellow or orange background material is fluorescent. It absorbs the invisible ultraviolet in daylight and re-emits it as visible light, which is why it looks like it is almost glowing on a dull morning and stands out far more than an ordinary bright colour would. This is the part that makes a worker conspicuous against a cluttered background in daylight, dawn and dusk.

What it needs to keep working:

  • Saturated colour. The effect depends on the dye. As the colour fades, the fluorescence weakens.
  • A clean surface. Road film, mud, oil and general grime sit over the fabric and cut how much light it can re-emit.
  • Enough area. The garment's class depends partly on how much fluorescent material is present and where. Covering it with a non-hi-vis body-warmer or tabard defeats the point.

Fluorescent fabric has no effect at night. Under headlights there is no UV to work with, so in the dark the bright colour on its own does very little. That is what the second material is for.

Part two: retroreflective tape, for headlights

The grey bands are retroreflective. An ordinary surface scatters light in all directions; a mirror bounces it off at an angle. Retroreflective material does something more useful: it sends light back towards wherever it came from. So when a driver's headlights hit the bands, a large share of that light travels straight back to the driver's eyes, and the worker appears to light up.

The tape is usually either a glass-bead film or a microprismatic film. Both depend on their fine structure being intact and clean.

What it needs to keep working:

  • An unbroken surface. Cracks, abrasion, lifting edges and hard creases all destroy the return. Check the tape both flat and flexed.
  • Cleanliness. A film of dirt over the tape scatters the light instead of returning it.
  • Adhesion. Tape peeling away from the fabric is on its way out.
  • Placement. The standard sets minimum band positions (around the torso, and usually the arms and legs) so the wearer's shape is recognisable as a person from any angle.
The daylight test and the night test are separate. Hold the garment up outdoors: is the colour still vivid, or has it gone pale and grubby? Then flex every reflective band and look along it: is the surface smooth and continuous, or cracked and lifting? A garment can pass one and fail the other. It needs to pass both to still be doing its job.

Why washing matters more than you would think

Laundering is the main thing that ages a hi-vis garment, which is why many of them carry a maximum number of wash cycles on the label alongside the care symbols. Each wash slightly fades the fluorescent dye and stresses the reflective tape and its adhesive. Get it wrong and you accelerate both:

  • Wash it too hot or tumble it hotter than the label allows and you can craze the reflective film and weaken the bond.
  • Leave it filthy between washes and grime becomes ingrained and permanent.
  • Overload the machine and abrasion against zips and other garments scuffs the tape.
  • Industrial laundering is harder on garments than domestic; if that is your route, factor a shorter service life.

Reading the label

UK hi-vis clothing is generally certified to the garment standard for high-visibility clothing, which sets three classes by how much fluorescent and reflective material is present and where. Higher class, more material, seen from further. Combining garments (a hi-vis jacket plus hi-vis trousers) is often what takes an outfit to the top class. What this means for buying and replacing

  • Buy the class your risk assessment sets for the task, not one size fits all.
  • Treat the wash-cycle limit on the label as a real end point, not a suggestion.
  • Inspect on a schedule: colour for daylight, tape for night.
  • Replace on condition, not appearance. Faded fabric or cracked tape means the garment is no longer performing even if it is intact. Our guide to replacing workwear covers the signs.

The short version

Fluorescent fabric makes you visible in daylight by re-emitting UV as visible light; it does nothing at night. Retroreflective tape makes you visible at night by sending headlight beams back to the driver; it depends on an unbroken, clean surface. Washing ages both, which is why there is a wash-cycle limit on the label. Judge a hi-vis garment on two separate tests, daylight colour and night-time tape, and replace it when it fails either.
