"Anti-static workwear" gets used as a catch-all term for two genuinely different situations. One is about protecting people and premises from a static spark igniting a flammable atmosphere. The other is about protecting sensitive electronic components from a static discharge that can damage them without anyone noticing at the time. The clothing standard behind both is EN 1149-5, but what "needed" means, and how seriously it needs treating, depends on which problem you actually have. This is not a substitute for your own risk assessment; it is a plain-English map of the terms so you know what to ask for.
Where static comes from in the first place
Ordinary synthetic fabrics generate and hold static charge through everyday movement and friction, the same effect behind a jumper crackling when you pull it off. In most environments that is a minor annoyance. In two specific environments it becomes a real hazard: where a flammable atmosphere exists and a discharge could ignite it, and where sensitive electronics are being handled and a discharge could damage them. Anti-static clothing is built to dissipate that charge safely rather than letting it build up and release suddenly.
EN 1149-5, in plain English
EN 1149-5 is the European standard covering material and design requirements for electrostatic dissipative protective clothing. Garments certified to it typically use a base fabric woven with conductive fibres, often a fine carbon or metallic thread grid, that gives static charge a controlled path to earth instead of letting it build up on the surface of the garment.
Anti-static vs ESD-safe: are they the same thing?
They overlap but are not automatically interchangeable, and this is where most confusion comes from.

Garments used for electronics work are often built to the same EN 1149-5 fabric principle, but the specification driving the purchase is different: an ATEX-related risk assessment for flammable-atmosphere work, versus a component-handling procedure or cleanroom protocol for ESD work. Which one applies to your site is not something a workwear supplier should be guessing at.
When it is actually needed
Anti-static clothing is not a default upgrade to buy "just in case". It is specified in response to an identified risk, the same way any other protective garment is.
- Flammable atmosphere sites. Where your own risk assessment, often informed by the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) and any site ATEX zoning, identifies a risk of static ignition.
- Electronics and component work. Where your quality or ESD control procedure specifies protective measures for handling static-sensitive parts.

If none of the above applies to your business, ordinary workwear is very likely the right answer, and paying for anti-static properties you do not need is money spent on the wrong problem.
Buying and looking after it correctly
Check the certification, not just the description
"Anti-static" as a marketing description on a listing is not the same as a garment certified to EN 1149-5. If the requirement comes from a risk assessment or an ESD procedure, ask for the certification specifically.
Wash it the way the label says
The conductive fibre grid can be affected by incorrect laundering, fabric softener, or by mixing garments with items that shed lint or fibres onto the conductive thread. Follow the manufacturer's care instructions rather than a general workwear routine.
Retire it when it is worn out
Conductive properties can degrade with heavy wear and repeated laundering over the garment's life. Where the protection is safety-critical, build replacement into your PPE review rather than waiting for a visible fault.
Remember it is one part of a system
Earthed footwear, appropriate flooring and correct procedure all sit alongside the garment. A single anti-static jacket worn with ordinary trainers on a non-conductive floor is not delivering the protection the standard assumes.
